SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

Thousands celebrated New Year's Day by taking the plunge into the water on Sullivan's Island. Those that did were were "freezin' for a reason."

Dunleavy's Pub, a local bar along Middle Street on Sullivan's Island, has hosted the event for 19 years. In 2003, they partnered with Special Olympic South Carolina, raising thousands of dollars for the program.

Those braving the cold for the big plunge said it was a creative way to start the new year.

"I've never done this before, so we're hoping for a lot of big new exciting things in 2014," said one participant.

Special Olympics South Carolina serves over 22,000 athletes, children, and adults, with intellectual disabilities.

People also took a dip in the ocean to start the New Year in front of the Tides Hotel on Folly Beach. This year, organizers asked that plungers to dress up as their favorite Bill Murray character.

Murray has a home in the Charleston area and is a part owner of the Charleston RiverDogs.
