USC's Spurrier, Wisconsin's Andersen hold final pre-bowl conference

ORLANDO, FL (WIS) -

It's been a busy day for the Gamecocks and the Wisconsin Badgers in Orlando. The coaches had a joint press conference and both teams attended a luncheon and pep rally, which wrapped up a short time ago.

At Tuesday's press conference, South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier and Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen posed with the Capital One Bowl trophy.

This is the second round for the Gamecocks at the Capital One Bowl. Two years ago, South Carolina defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers and finished the season with 11 wins for the first time in school history.

This time, the Gamecocks are seeking a third 11-win season and a third straight bowl victory.

"I was just up here two years ago same time, same place, but this time we're playing Wisconsin instead of Nebraska, but a lot of similarities," said Spurrier.

Spurrier is expecting a tough fight against his new Big Ten foes.

"They're a tough team," said Spurrier.

The Head Ball Coach praised the Badger defense, especially in the red zone where they've only allowed 11 touchdowns and 11 field goals.

"They make you earn just about everything you can get," said Spurrier. "They really are a tough, physical team; well coached and they play real hard."

The Gamecocks will have to rely on senior quarterback Connor Shaw, who will wear the South Carolina uniform for the final time on Wednesday. Spurrier said his senior's arm has matured more than his legs this season.

"We try to tell him to throw first a lot and then take off running, and lately, he's done very good at that," said Spurrier.

Coach Andersen said the combination of Shaw and Spurrier makes the Gamecocks offense a "vicious weapon." Andersen also said he respected Shaw's pedigree as a coach's son.

"He competitive," said Andersen. "He can hurt you with his arm, his legs, and his mind."

Andersen also said he and his team aren't afraid of the SEC.

"We're ready to go," said Andersen.

The Gamecocks kick off against the Wisconsin Badgers at 1 p.m. on ABC. We'll have full coverage of the game online beginning Wednesday morning.
