An E-F 4 tornado ripped through the Pine Belt on February 10, 2013, which makes it one of the notable events that shook the Pine belt in 2013.
It was a violent tornado that destroyed some of the Pine Belt areas including USM, The Ogletree House, and Elam Arms Dormitory. The rose garden, and many oak trees at the front of campus were also destroyed as well as hundreds of homes.
Although the storm uprooted many homes and businesses, many sought the opportunity to lend a hand to those in need.
"I've got power, I'm doing good. THere's a truck driver in the road where I see gasoline in the back of it, and there's people trying to help others," said volunteer Dave Ware.
The tornado reached estimated maximum sustained winds of 170 mph. It was declared a federal disaster area by President Obama, and although the Pine Belt continued to rebuild, the area has come a long way since February 10, 2013.
