Jackson car thief finds child strapped in back seat

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Christmas Eve thieves who took off in a car got more than they bargained for.

It started when a babysitter went into the McDonalds on Hanging Moss road and left the car running with a three-year-old little girl strapped in the back seat.

A thief shattered the window of the car, entered it and then drove way, with the little girl still onboard.

Thankfully the stranger didn't harm her.

He took her to a dark street two and a half miles away and left her there.

It was in the vicinity of Keele Street and Cedars of Lebanon.

"I would say it was God's blessing to bring her to us," said Larry Weathersby.

He was inside his Keele Street home when the three year old made it up his walkway.

"I heard a little light knock at the door and I asked who it was and I heard a little small voice and I opened the door and it was a little girl. I didn't se a car or nothing like that," said Weathersby.

The little girl got out of the cold and was able to tell the Weathersby family what happened to her.

"When I got home the little girl was sitting in my living room and I asked her name and she told me. And I asked her what happened and.... she said 'The man dropped her off that broke Shay's window'," said Weatherby's wife Ora White.

"She's very smart, very intelligent. We just thank God that she is safe and back with her family for the holidays," added White.

Meanwhile, the police are still searching for the car.

"We're not sure how many suspects are in the vehicle. We're just trying to locate this vehicle. we're asking anybody if they have any additional information in this incident to notify us immediately," said JPD Officer Colendula Green.

The missing vehicle is a tan 2012 Nissan Altima, tag number HQC218.

Please call Jackson Police if you have seen this vehicle or know anything about this crime.
