South Carolina to face Akron in Christmas Day game

(RNN) - South Carolina (3-6) faces Akron in the Diamond Head Classic on Christmas Day at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Because of a scheduling coincidence, the two teams are scheduled to play again in Columbia on Dec. 28.

The Gamecocks are 1-1 in the Classic with a win over St. Mary's and a loss on Monday to Boise State in the semifinal round.

The Zips (6-3) lost 83-60 to nationally ranked Iowa State in their semifinal game. They were within a point, 41-40 with about 17 minutes left in the second half when Iowa State began to stretch its lead and take control.

Reggie McAdams led the team with 13 points, hitting five-of-10 shots including three, 3-pointers. Demetrius Treadwell, a 6-7 senior forward and the team's leading scorer had 10 points, five below his season average.

Poor shooting took the Gamecocks out of the game early against Boise (8-2); they trailed 43-28 at the half and went on to lose 80-54.

Brenton Williams scored 14 points for the Gamecocks and Duane Notice added 13.

"He had skills that not everybody possesses," said former Wayne County head baseball coach Michael Gavin. "And the biggest thing was his work ethic. I never had a kid that would work as hard as he do." Gavin saw the potential in Dylan Snypes back when he donned a War Eagle uniform.
