PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Several families will be able to brave the freezing temperatures thanks to the help of two area organizations.
The Petal Girl Scouts as well as the Forrest General Spirit Girls hosted a coat drive. The group gathered almost 300 coats and gave them away to whomever needed one. The groups received coat donations from Petal Schools as well as community members.
According to the groups, the need in the area for coats was greater than expected.
"There's a big need in the area of Petal and surrounding areas, Hattiesburg and some of the places. You don't realize it until the people walk in and need the coats for their whole family," said Petal Girl Scout leader Garnet Santangelo. "People are always in need of clothing, especially in the winter months, it's really hard to find those warm coats that are financially reasonable to buy. So when these people are from these backgrounds that cannot afford coats for their families come by, it tugs our heart strings, so we want to help them."
This is the seventh annual coat drive the Petal Girl Scouts have hosted.
