Court upholds conviction in kidnapping case

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A federal appeals court has upheld the conviction of a woman convicted in the carjacking and kidnapping of two teenagers who were taken from Mississippi to South Carolina.

Federal prosecutors say Annette Pierce, also known as Norma Lisa Thiem and Myrtis Annette Thiem, and Ronald Wayne Shugart abducted the two teens at knifepoint in Vicksburg, Miss., in 2005 and took them to Laurens County, S.C.

They were convicted in 2006. Pierce was sentenced to more than nine years. Shugart was sentenced to 20 years.

On appeal, Pierce argued that the trial court used an improper jury instruction and that her lawyer didn't do a good job.

The U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld her conviction in a ruling Thursday.
