Hattiesburg Police Department host annual Christmas Party for Pine Belt kids

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

The Hattiesburg Police Department hosted it's annual Christmas Party for kids on Friday.

HPD's public information officer and internal investigations officer lieutenant Jon Traxler said the event makes for a great way to give back to the community during the holiday season.

"We adopt some children in the neighborhood and in the city. We give them gifts, do things for em, and Santa comes here and hands em out gifts and stuff like that we also present them with food and stuff," said Traxler. "By us giving back to them, it shows them that we're also good people and we're here to help them and do good for em not just as most people see police officers as here to arrest them."

According to Traxler, HPD is not the only group in the community giving back. Traxler added that Grace Temple Baptist Church has a group in its congregation who pray for each officer's well being throughout the week.
