Bond set for woman charged with murder in Columbia baby burning

COLUMBIA, MS (WDAM) -

A 26-year-old mother has been ordered held on 1 million dollars bond on murder chargers of her newborn baby.

Sasha Stokes made her initial court appearance in Columbia Thursday morning on murder charges. Marion County Deputies said Stokes placed her infant into a metal drum and then set it on fire.

Deputies were alerted to the incident by an anonymous phone call. When authorities arrived at the residence on Arthur B. Johnson Lane they found the charred remains of a baby inside the barrel.

Neighbors said they saw fire in the barrel as late as Sunday night.

So far, an autopsy has not been able to determine if the infant was dead when placed in the barrel, or died as a result of burns.

Stokes is being held in the Marion-Walthall county regional jail under suicide watch.
