HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Legislators, business leaders and engineers from across Mississippi gathered in Hattiesburg Wednesday night to discuss ways to fund needed road and bridge repairs in the state.
A Senate Highways and Transportation Study Committee hosted a public meeting at Southern Miss. It was moderated by Senate Highways and Transportation Committee chairman Willie Simmons.
He said the state must develop new funding sources to maintain and repair hundreds of bridges and thousands of miles of roadways.
"We're very pleased with the highway system, the four-lane highway system that we've put together, but there was no money put into the funding formula to maintain those highways," Simmons said. "So, those highways are beginning to deteriorate, and it's like investing in a business and do not have any money to maintain it. You're eventually going to destroy the business," he said.
Wednesday's meeting was the third and final held across the state on the issue.
Other meetings were held in Indianola and Oxford.
