MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A DeSoto County sheriff's deputy was arrested Monday night and charged with petit larceny.

Hernando Police Chief Mike Riley confirms that Justin Morgan Burford has since bonded out of jail.

According to Chief Riley, the charge stems from an affidavit that was signed by someone claiming Burford took items that did not belong to him from a workout facility in Hernando.

DeSoto County Sheriff's Department says Burford has been a patrol deputy since January 2011. The department advised Burford is suspended without pay pending the outcome of the case.

The incident reportedly happened when the deputy was off duty.
