Shelby Co. Commission passes 'no confidence' resolution against election administrator

(WMC-TV) - The Shelby County Election Commission passed a "no confidence" resolution against Shelby County Election Commission Administrator Rich Holden Monday. That resolution passed 9-0.

Although, the Election Commission is the only body that can call for formal action against him, such as his three-day suspension.

Shelby County Commissioner Wyatt Bunker led the effort to pass a "no confidence" vote.

"I feel it's the right thing to do because the Election Commission refuses to take action," said Bunker.

Bunker said an internal audit revealing high-risk failures in the commission prompted the no-confidence vote. Read more about that here.

The chairman of the Shelby County Election Commission echoes what Rich Holden told Action News 5 off camera: That issues cited by the county commission have already been addressed.

Shelby County Election Commission chairman Robert Meyers still has confidence in Holden.

"I mean, I think people in general should do what they think is best, and if that was the spirit in which this was done ... That's fine," said Meyers. "The issues that were cited in the audit have been addressed and, in fact, were addressed before the audit came out"

Meyers and Holden contend that more than a dozen elections have since taken place with no major problems and that the commission itself requested audits now be conducted following every November general election.

Two previous attempts to remove Holden have failed.

New parents, Joshua and Abbye Sparks can't believe the coincidences of their first child birthday. They said their little one, Tyler Sparks, was the seventh baby born on July 17 2017 at Merit Health Wesley in Hattiesburg. "So we were all laughing about how seven is his lucky number," Abbye said. But, both Joshua and Abbye say they truly believe luck had nothing to do with finally holding their first born. "He is our little miracle," Abbye said. The Sparks said ...
