BESSEMER, AL (WBRC) -

By the end of December, more than 200 inmates will be housed once again in the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer.

Officials say this will help relieve overcrowding in the Birmingham jail and some say it will even help businesses in the area.

"It does give us an economic boost," Mayor Kenneth Gulley said. "It gives us new traffic downtown. People eat at our restaurants, fill up gas at our stores."

"Well this is like an economic engine," Jefferson Co. Commissioner Jimmie Stephens said. "Like a company coming in and hiring 45 people."

Defense attorneys in Bessemer are also glad to have the jail re-open. They say they will no longer have to spend time traveling back and forth to Birmingham.
