Organization helps provide 350 families with Christmas meal

MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WMBF) - A group of people in Myrtle Beach run an organization that gets a meal to 350 families in need on Christmas Day.

The Feed A Family website says their group is made up of friends, business owners and professionals from Myrtle Beach who want to give back to their community. They operate out of the Hilton in Myrtle Beach, who provides their facility and staff at no cost to the project.

Shipments of food arrive daily through Christmas Eve, loaded with turkey, potatoes, green beans - everything in a traditional Christmas meal. Feed A Family raises around $30,000 each year to fund the meals it sends. On Christmas Eve, around 400 volunteers will help cook and deliver the food to families so they have a meal for Christmas.

JouJou Safa is a co-founder of Feed A Family, and sees the response from the people they help first-hand. "A lot of the families are just so thankful, and we deliver to some very needy families," Sofa says.

Safa says the response from the community has been incredible, and unexpected. Some of their volunteers leave work to help unload trucks on their lunch breaks. In addition, they plan to provide 1,500 meals to food banks and other organizations around Myrtle Beach.

    There were two Rite Aid stores in the Pine Belt at the start of 2018; one in Petal and one in Hattiesburg. Now, only the Petal location remains open, but it will soon close its doors for good, too.
