HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A December commencement ceremony at the University of Southern Mississippi was a little different this year than usual.

Mac David, who received his degree Friday in education, is a student that was born with a condition that caused him to go blind. For the past five years, he has used a seeing-eye dog named Cy. When Mac walked across the stage to receive his diploma, Cy was there, too- wearing his very own cap and gown.

"I told them [commencement organizers] I had a really weird question for them," explained David about his idea to have Cy receive a diploma. "I asked them that and they said, ‘Haven't heard that one. Let me get back to you.'"

The plans were worked out so that Cy could receive his diploma along with David. When asked what Cy received his degree in, David joked, "Teacher's pet."
