Man convicted in fatal hit and run incident

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Jeycob England has been found guilty of manslaughter, and Hinds County Circuit Judge Tomie Green has sentenced him to 20 years in prison.

Jurors found mercy for England by choosing the lesser charge of manslaughter.

The jury returned with the verdict around 5:15 Thursday afternoon after deliberating almost seven hours.

Scotty Ford's two brothers, and his mother spoke in open court before the sentence was read.

His brothers said they felt manslaughter would carry too light a sentence, and they've felt grief every day since their brother was killed.

Judge Tomie Green said there were no winners in the case.  Green said, "Any life lost is a tragedy."

England took the stand in his own defense Wednesday during his murder trial. He's was charged with killing Scotty Ford during a fight in the Target parking lot in Jackson in 2011.

England testified that a group of men were beating up his friend, Christian Craft, and he swerved his car towards the group in an effort to get them off him. England says he felt two bumps but wasn't sure what he hit.

"I wish Scotty was still here," England said.

Also taking the stand was forensic pathologist Dr. Mark LeVaughn, who testified that Ford died from multiple massive blood traumatic injuries.

Both sides rested in the case Wednesday
