Hattiesburg garbage truck fire extinguished on Highway 98

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Shortly after 9 a. m. in Hattiesburg on Thursday the city's fire department responded to a fire inside a garbage truck on Hwy 98 west.

The truck's contents were discovered to be on fire, and the fire department had the truck operator dump its contents onto the roadway where it was quickly extinguished.

The accident scene was cleared, and the blocked lanes were reopened in fewer than two hours.

The truck belonged to the waste company ENVIRO. A second garbage truck and crews were brought in to recover the remaining waste. The garbage truck was hauling cardboard waste from restaurants and other types of businesses and was able to drive away under its own power. Damage to the truck appeared minimal.

The incident occurred on Hwy 98 in the westbound lanes near Gravel Pit Road. The exact cause of the fire is unknown. No investigation will be conducted.
