HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - The Laurel Police Department visited third graders at Maddox Elementary School Tuesday to teach the kids about the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
This is part of the Healthy Heroes Initiative, a program funded by a grant from the Blue Cross/Blue Shield Foundation of Mississippi.
"Approximately a year and a half ago, Chief Stewart asked the Laurel Police Department to find an initiative to these ends: improve the children's health, go into the community and explain to everybody how exercise can be fun and can improve your lifestyle," said Doug Dickerson, Corporal Grant Coordinator for the LPD. "And that's what we're doing here today."
Officers led the kids in exercises and then for a parade-style fitness walk. The objective was to show the students that exercise can be fun. The enthusiastic third graders also learned about nutritious eating habits.
Each month the LPD visits a different area school to spread the message of healthy eating and exercise. This is the LPD's fourth stop and five more visits are planned to Laurel schools before the end of the school year.
