Columbia kicks off Candlelight, Carols, and Claus in Downtown Columbia

Columbia kicks of its annual Candlelight, Carols, and Claus event with a tree lighting and children's choir downtown.
 
The event in the heart of downtown Columbia features sales and refreshments by local merchants,
and chance to get children and choral groups out and about to celebrate the Christmas spirit. There are bell ensembles and caroling groups along with a Christmas Carnival with rides and fair food for the kids.
 
Ccandlelight, Carols and Claus hopes to bring those in the community and close by together to celebrate Christmas and an opportunity to shop and support local merchants
 
Shannon Ellis with Main Street, Inc. said, "This is our annual promotion of Candlelight, Carols, and Claus, for the merchants of downtown Columbia and to kick off the Christmas and shopping season and we have a lot of special sales going on in our stores. We've got carnival events for the kids. We've got an awesome new movie theater. We've got a farmers market going on down the street. Our vendors there that are our usual Thursday and Saturday morning vendors. Just a lot going on to come see."
 
Candlelight, Carols, and Claus will continue from 6 to 10pm Friday and Saturday with a Christmas parade on Friday night and then a Reindeer Run 5K and God Speed Three concert on Saturday night.

    Scooby-Doo, Captain America and other superheroes were at JavaWerks on Saturday to help raise money for the memorial foundation for a fallen Hattiesburg Police Officer. Officers Liquori Tate and Benjamin Deen were shot during a traffic stop on May 9, 2015, on East 4th Street.  Both officers later died at Forrest General Hospital from their injuries.  So far, three people have been sentenced in their murders.

    Mississippi Highway Patrol said a Hattiesburg man was killed after driving the wrong way on I-59 Friday night. Master Sergeant Brent Barfield, Public Information Officer for MHP Troop 6, said James Dawkins, 58, was driving northbound in the southbound land of I-59 when he collided head-on with another vehicle.  The accident happened around 11:00 p.m. near mile marker 52 in Lamar County.  Dawkins died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. The electrocution happened at Pitts Swabbing Service on Highway 84 East when a man operating an oil derrick reportedly came into contact with a high voltage cable, according to a press release from the Jones County Fire Council.
