Tenn. officials concerned ice storm could be ‘major historic event'

(WMC-TV) - Officials in Dyersburg and Dyer County are preparing for what they are concerned could end up being a "major historic event".

The storms moving into the area could bring with it ice and sleet, causing power outages throughout the county.

Dyersburg's 911 office is ready for a busy day, and city leaders say they have been preparing for the storm since Monday.

Residents say they are as ready as they are going to get for the winter storm.

For Billy Cannon, it is all about watching the weather and waiting for his wife to get off of work.

Hundreds lined up inside and outside Casey's General Store in Dyersburg, filling their gas tanks and their stomachs.

"More or less worried than excited. Don't want to lose power ... Gotta stay warm, keep the kids warm," added Dyersburg resident Joey Reynolds.

"I've been without power before. I'll be OK for a couple of days. I don't have to go to Walmart because I already had enough food," said Dyersburg resident John Henderson.

Many are already staying off the roads and inside as temperatures continue to drop.

Students are happy about their long weekend.

"Heat and cooking … I'm not too worried about because we have gas. But when the electric goes off, I can't see what I'm doing," said Billy Cannon.

Officials in Dyersburg say road conditions are likely to worsen sometime Friday.

Roshunda Trody said, "Two turkeys, ham, dressing, greens cabbage, french beans with white potatoes and turkey butts in it." Hefty dinner menus for Thanksgiving day. Trody said, "I'm from Hattiesburg, MS, but I'm back in town to be with my family for the holidays and doing a little bit of last minute shopping." ...

    Fans were waiting in the parking lot Wednesday outside Hattiesburg High School for tickets to go on sale for the 5A South State Championship Friday night. The Tigers are hosting the Laurel Tornadoes in a I-59 showdown.  The game, a repeat of the "Lil' Brown Jug" game will give the Tornadoes the chance at revenge, after Hattiesburg won the rivalry game 20-14 in August.
