Hang the holiday lights with less stress

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Thanksgiving is over and it's that time of year when people start digging out the holiday decorations.

CBS5 talked with the owner of Holiday Lights Decorating, Tony Snider, to get some ideas on how to make hanging those Christmas lights a little easier.

First, use sturdy, reliable ladders. Second, Snider said to always, "separate your power."

"Use an outlet in the left side, outlet in the middle, outlet on the right side... that way it keeps you from tripping breakers," said Snider.

He also warns to buy quality products because some lights hardly last a season. He believes it's worth it to get professional grade lights.

Once the lights are purchased, be sure to read the directions on the side of the box.

"One hundreds... you can only plug in three strands. You can plug in more and they'll work but eventually they're going to go out," said Snider

Also, never connect different types of lights on the same circuit or outlet.

"It works better when you have two people. So you're not up and down ladders so much. You have someone handing you stuff," said Snider.

Here's a final tip.

"A lot of people don't know that if you tape your plugs... your extension cords where you plug in, helps with the water for when it rains so it would trip your GFIs," said Snider.
