Hattiesburg woman wins $100,000 by close call

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Hattiesburg woman is going home with a little more money in her wallet thanks to a game she played after a regular shopping experience.

Vickie Knight won $100,000 through the Fred's Super Dollar Explore the Store Scratch and Win Game, but the money was almost given to someone else.

"They called me, and at first I thought it was a joke, so I hung up on them," said Knight. "She called back, and I didn't answer the phone, and so she e-mailed me, and we went from there."

Knight says her husband, who works with local law enforcement, warned her that it could be a scam.

"It took about… five times for everybody to call me and tell me," said Knight.

As she and her husband shopped at Fred's Thursday morning before the check presentation, Knight laughed and said she had never won anything in her life.

"I didn't think I was going to win," she laughed.

When asked how the 100 grand will be spent, Knight said: "Pay off some bills and help my momma out."
