First Baptist Church to expand campus across Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - First Baptist Church of Hattiesburg will expand it's church campus to another part of the city.

"People won't drive more than 15 to 20 minutes to go to church," said Jeff Powell, the director of Worship Programming. "So instead of expecting people to drive farther and farther here, we want to go to where they are and get closer and closer to where they are."

According to Powell, distance is one of the many reason's the church is looking to open it's first multi-site campus in the old Hunt Club.

The Hunt Club was notorious for fights, and most recently, the shooting that injured three University of Southern Mississippi football players that ultimately ended with the city shutting the spot down.

The Hunt Club is now stripped of its letter, and covered with overgrown brush. According to Powell, the church hopes to change it's tainted reputation.

"It was a place where lives were changed, and now again, it will be a place where lives are changed, but they'll be changed for the better now," said Powell.

With a few renovations the church hopes to reach more people and open it's doors at it's new campus by the Fall of next year.
