Columbia Police Chief Clint McMurry said scams ramp up during the holiday as

According to Columbia Police Chief Clint McMurry, people look for easy money by taking advantage of the charitable nature of others.

McMurry said several people in Columbia have fallen prey to scams recently. These common scams such as loadable debit cards, mystery shopper, or fake checks have already resulted in tens of thousands of dollars being taken from people in the community over the last several weeks.

McMurry said never send money anywhere. McMurry also said that if people ask for money it is a scam.

If people receive what appears to be a legitimate check in the mail that they are not expecting, it is a scam.

For more information on what may or may not be a scam, contact local authorities.
