Portion of W. 4th Street open, Gravel Pit Road closed through end of year

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A portion of West Fourth Street that was closed due to construction is now open again although construction on Jackson Road will continue.

The construction is part of an estimated $4 million project to widen streets and increase the flow of traffic in the area.  The section of Jackson Road that is currently under construction  will give travelers access between Highway 98, West 4th Street, Lincoln Road and into Forrest County. Project engineer Jason Lamb says the expansion is about halfway complete and the importance of proper completion is to meet safety regulations.

"This roadway was narrow, and it did not meet the geometric criteria for safe travels," said Lamb. "We've widened the roadways substantially which will allow a little bit larger traffic volume.  It will certainly allow for much safer travel through the area."

Lamb said a traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Jackson Road and West 4th Street with the hopes of its operation being in place before Thanksgiving.

"We do have a three-way stop in place," said Lamb, "and we ask that all travelers acknowledge the three-way stop condition until we're able to place the traffic signal into permanent service.

Beginning Monday, Gravel Pit Road will be closed through the end of the year with no set date to reopen.
