HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hundreds of Oak Grove first grade students have helped a Hattiesburg retailer kick-off an annual holiday canned food drive.

They've donated food, decorated Christmas trees and even met Santa Claus at Ashley Furniture Home Store store to help that business with its 7th annual food drive to aid the Homes of Hope for Children.

More than 400 youngsters have visited the store since Wednesday to help decorate six trees in the store.

Owner Bo Pennebaker expects to collect about 1,500 non-perishable food items. They'll be donated after Dec. 19.

"We want to serve our community and Homes of Hope being a local ministry that looks after kids that need a place to call home, it's easy for us, especially in this season of the year, to give back to our community by partnering with Oak Grove and raising up some non-perishables and some canned foods," said Pennebaker.

The classes that collect the most food will receive a pizza party.
