(CNN) - No American who was alive on that day will ever forget. They can still tell you precisely where they were when they heard the all but incomprehensible news that the 35th President of the United States, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, had been assassinated.

As the 50-year anniversary of that dark day in American history approaches, many are reflecting on the legacy of JFK.

Including his nephew, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who said:

His pursuit for peace, his pursuit for civil rights and justice was something that even if the press tries to deny it or historians or whatever, it something that at that time and a generation afterwards everybody in the world recognized that this was America at its best.

The city of Dallas where Kennedy was gunned down will honor the slain president on Nov. 22. Throughout the city, church bells will ring and a moment of silence at 12:30 p.m., will mark the moment the president was assassinated 50 years ago.
