A three-year-old Petal girl and her family will soon be on their way to Disney Theme Parks, Sea World and Universal Studios as part of a special trip of a lifetime, sponsored by the Make-A-Wish Foundation and USM's Chi Omega Sorority.

Emily Leblanc and her family will make their journey in December but Tuesday, they were the guests of honor during a wish reveal and send-off party at the Chi Omega House on the Southern Miss campus.

Emily has been battling a life-threatening form of eye cancer.

"For her to be given this opportunity and to allow the family to join in, it is a blessing and it is a dream come true," said Christina Leblanc, Emily's mother.

"This is a break, not only for Emily, but her entire family away from the worries of having to go to the doctor and everything that comes along with that," said Charley Powell, Make-A-Wish laison for Chi Omega Sorority.

"(Emily) can ride rides and meet princesses and just have a wonderful time and they can all forget about her illness for a little bit and focus on being a family and a kid," said Shellie Moses, regional director for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Mississippi.

The funds to send Emily on her trip were raised during the sorority's annual Songfest.  This year's Songfest will be held Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. at Reed Green Coliseum.

Winter months are some of the busiest for firefighters, and not just because of the cold temperatures. “This time of the year, December, January and February, statistically nationwide we have more structure fires than any other point in the year,” said Hattiesburg Fire Marshal Stephen Mooney. In the recent weeks, Hattiesburg firefighters responded to five house fires, with the latest one on Monday, being caused by an extension cord. “Extension cords are a hug...
