Pine Belt residents run to help the hungry in Hattiesburg

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Hundreds of Pine Belt residents took part in the first annual Hattiesburg Hunger Run on Saturday.

The 5k put together by Southern Prohibition and The Thirsty Hippo benefited the nonprofit organization Extra Table. Thanks to everyone's participation, the run raised more than $5,000, and all goes towards feeding the hungry close to home.

"They're helping the people right here in Hattiesburg who are hungry," said Extra Table Executive Director Raven Tynes. "We have regular average Joe's who are working and just can't make ends meet and they need help and so that's what we do, we supply food pantries and soup kitchens with healthy food each month to supplement families who are in need."

Following the race, participants were able to enjoy barbecue, beer and live music at The Thirsty Hippo.
