Laurel Police expect arrest soon in Thursday murder

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Laurel Police say they are close to arresting those responsible for fatally shooting a man at an apartment complex Thursday night. Chief Tyrone Stewart said officers are currently interviewing witnesses and potential suspects in the shooting death of Douglas McGruder, 26. 

Shortly before 8 p.m. Thursday, police said McGruder was shot once as he was sitting in a chair outside his apartment at South Park Village. At least four other people were inside his apartment at the time of the shooting. 

Stewart said one or more arrests could be made soon. He also said he's awaiting results from McGruder's autopsy.     

McGruder's death is the third homicide in Laurel this year.

    An Ellisville man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of his wife. Jones County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Whitney G. Kitchens, 42, on Tuesday after responding to a shots fired complain on Oak Bowery Road in Ellisville, according to a Jones County Sheriff's Department press release.  Deputies were advised that the suspect had shot his wife multiple times.
