MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Some animal lovers may see it as a good idea to care for stray deer, but state wildlife officials are warning Alabamians of the dangers of having deer as pets after a man was attacked.

"People have good intentions. They pick them up. They take them home. They try to care for them and realize they can't," said Kevin Dodd, Enforcement Chief for the Alabama Division of Wildlife & Freshwater Fisheries.

Dodd says 69-year-old Julius Dunsmore of Marshall County is lucky to be alive after the incident last week.

Dunsmore went into the one-acre enclosure behind his house where seven deer were being held to trim some brush. Dodd told WSFA 12  News that Dunsmore knew to be cautious around the large buck but didn't see it.

The buck reportedly picked up Dunsmore on his antlers and carried him 30 feet. Dunsmore suffered puncture wounds in his legs, stomach, torso, face and skull. His optic nerve was severed and he's lost vision.

Evidence indicates some of Dunsmore's deer came from Tennessee and at least one came from Guntersville State Park, according to the WFF.

Dunsmore has been charged with illegal possession of deer. The deer were removed from his property and euthanized. Dodd says reintroducing domesticated deer into the wild isn't an option because they normally return to inhabited areas.
