The University Research Council at The University of Southern Mississippi hosted presentations by the 2013 Excellence in Research and Creative Activity award winners on Friday during the annual University Research Awards.

This event recognizes outstanding researchers, scholars, innovators and performers among the Southern Miss Faculty each year. It showcases faculty scholarships, and creative activities in various departments at Southern Miss. It also features recipients of the innovation awards. Assistant professor of psychology, Michael Madson, says today is unlike any other day at The University of Southern Mississippi.

"Not only is it important because it generates knowledge that can be disseminated to the public, but it actually forms a lot of the education that takes place at the university. Faculty that are active in research are also being able to bring that research into the classroom, and inform students of cutting edge happenings in their disciplines," Madson said.

This year's Research Award recipients are Steven Barthelme, a short story novelist and essayist in the USM creative writing program, and Sabine Heinhorst, and internationally renowned biochemist.

As a freshman quarterback playing behind one of the best athletes to come through Columbia Academy in recent years, Thomas Erastus “Ras” Pace got his first career start in what was arguably the Cougars’ biggest game of the 2016 season. “I thought I did a pretty good job handing the ball off,” said Pace of his starting debut in a second-round MAIS AAA playoff game in place of the inured Wiley Cleland.
