PETAL, MS (WDAM) - Dozens of South Mississippi veterans were honored during an early Veterans Day event at Petal High School Friday morning. A third annual program in the school gymnasium featured patriotic music and the recognition of each branch of the armed forces.
The youngest, oldest and longest serving veteran in attendance also received a special gift from the school.
A video tribute to Mississippi soldiers killed in action since 9/11 was also featured.
"It's the first one I've been to and it was real, real enjoyable," said Paul Sonnier, a World War Two veteran who attended.
"This is my second one," said Raylawni Branch, a veteran from Hattiesburg. Last year was great, this one's even better," she said.
"This is a huge honor to be able to see all the veterans today and it's a really good experience because we get to learn from the veterans," said Braley Hogge, a member of the Petal High School JR ROTC.
"It just teaches a life-long message for those kids," said Steve Simmons, principal of Petal High School.
Prior to the program, the honored guests were treated to breakfast in the school's cafeteria.
