New harassment claim filed against SCMPD

Posted: Updated:

A former Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan police officer has filed a sexual harassment claim against the police department.

Wednesday, an attorney representing former Metro officer Alexandria Clayton sent a letter to the city claiming a pattern of harassment and saying Clayton may sue. It was the fourth such letter sent to the city by an officer claiming harassment or retaliation for reporting harassment, in a little over a month.

Clayton claims she was retaliated against and fired for reporting sexual harassment.

Her attorney, William Claiborne, is representing the three other officers bringing harassment claims against the department.

"Unfortunately, it appears that there was a pattern of conduct that occurred over a period of time," Claiborne said. "That those individuals who did the right thing, who stepped forward and complained about harassment that they were either subjected to or saw occurring, that those people were unfortunately retaliated against, and this is another example of that."

Neither Metro police nor the city attorney's office are commenting on the claim.

Claiborne says more complaints may be coming.
