Two Jones County organizations compete in mustache contest

ELLISVILLE, MS (WDAM) - South Central Regional Medical Center and GE-Aviation in Ellisville are going head to head in a mustache growing contest to help raise awareness on men's health.

The competition is part of the international Movember campaign that is held in November to heighten awareness on men's health, specifically prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health. Thirty-two men from each organization are starting off the month clean shaven and for the next month will grow out their mustaches. At the end of the month the mustaches will be judged and prizes handed out.

"The general effort is to make men think about their healthcare in general and more specifically try to convince them that it is important to have symptoms checked," said Dr. Cameron Pimperl, Radiation Oncologist, SCRMC. "When you get to your 40's and 50's you need to start having discussions about a lot of different malignancies and screening options."

The idea of getting the two organizations together for the campaign came from the GE plant.

"Our priorities are to promote education and promote community health," said Nate Beach,  GE, plant field leader. "One of our employees did this in a plant in Florida and when he moved here, he thought it would be a perfect way to have some fun and raise awareness at the same time."

The two teams will come together on Dec., 2, to judge the mustaches and announce the winners.
