PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

More than a dozen women gathered in Petal Saturday to help build a home for a deserving family while bringing attention to breast cancer. They took part in a Breast Cancer Women's Build for the Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity.

They were doing landscaping and other work at a home on McInnis Avenue.

Construction is expected to be finished by the end of the year.

"October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we have several survivors among our volunteers, family and friends, so absolutely, we're doing this today in honor of those survivors," said Laura Goodwin-Wright, resource development and communications manager for the Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity.

"This being a women build project, I just felt like I'd be more comfortable with women working with other women around and so that's why I decided to come to this one specifically," said Carol Hunt, a volunteer from Florence, Mississippi.

"I enjoy coming out as much as I can on Saturdays to help somebody else get their home built, because I know I'm in line and I'm going to need help as well when it's my turn," said Geneal Washam, a volunteer who has also partnered with Habitat for Humanity to have a home built for her.

The home on McInnis Avenue is the 62nd home built by the Hattiesburg Area Habitat for Humanity in the last 20 years.
