TRINITY, TX (KTRE) -

A 45-year-old Livingston man's day went from bad to worse in a hurry Tuesday morning.

After his lit cigarette ignited gasoline fumes at a Valero convenience store in Trinity and singed his facial hair and eyebrows, the Trinity Police officer that responded to the 911 call ran his driver's license and found that he had outstanding warrants.

James Lee Taylor is still being held in jail on two misdemeanor warrants out of Liberty County for theft by check and a bond forfeiture for a failure to appear charge. There was no information on what his bail amount was.

According to Trinity Police Chief Steve Jones, the incident occurred at approximately 8:17 a.m. Tuesday morning. Jones said Taylor pulled up to the Valero station and bought $5 worth of gas and a pack of cigarettes.

Taylor lit a cigarette and started pumping gas into his Ford Mustang. When the gasoline fumes ignited, they burned his facial hair and eyebrows, melted his cigarette lighter, caught the gas pump on fire, Jones said. In addition, one of Taylor's flip-flops caught on fire. The flames also charred the side of his Mustang.

After Taylor threw the cigarette lighter and burner flip-flop away, one Valero employee quickly shut off the gas pump. Another Valero employee rushed out with a fire extinguisher and put out the flames.

In addition to the fact that Taylor had outstanding arrest warrants, the TPD officer at the scene also discovered that the man didn't have car insurance. As a result, his car was towed from the scene.

Taylor told TPD Sgt. Randy Wheeler that he had been smoking while he pumped his gas all of his life and that this was the first time something like this had happened to him. However, he did say he would never smoke while he is pumping gas again.
