HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

For some area folks, it was love at first sight Sunday night at the third annual "Tails and Ales" doggie speed dating party with Southern Pines Animal Shelter.

Ten dogs were up for adoption at the event, which was held at the Keg and Barrel in Hattiesburg. Some of those pups made it home with a new family.

"I had no intentions of getting a dog when I came," says new pet owner Carolyn Karlovich. "After he came by the table a few times, we just kind of bonded."

Shelter manager Theresa Venette says the dogs are chosen based on a number of characteristics.

"Partially on personality, partially on looks," says Venette. "We wanted to have a good variety so that people would have different types of dogs to choose from. We wanted dogs, obviously, that were going to do well in a setting with a lot of people and a lot of other dogs."

She also says that this style of party helps with interaction between potential pet owners and the shelter animals.

"We do have a number of people in the community that, for whatever reason, feel uncomfortable coming out to the shelter," says Venette. "They get sad seeing all of those dogs all in the same place."

Sunday's event only featured dogs, but the shelter in Hattiesburg has close to 200 pets up for adoption.
