HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Three voters in the September special mayoral election may be illegitimate voters for Hattiesburg elections.
According to voting records, firemen Joseph Anderson and Gregory Hinton cast ballots in the recent mayoral election, as well as Anderson's wife Carmon, who is human resources director for Hattiesburg Public Schools.
While the Andersons own a house at Windsor Drive in Hattiesburg, their homestead exemption records show their permanent residence is on McLemore Road in Jones County.
According to Jones County records, the Andersons filed for class 1 home tax credit for 2012 and filed for homestead exemption in February 2013, which was months before the mayoral election.
When a visit was made to the Andersons' Hattiesburg address, the following conversation took place:
"Are you Mr. Anderson?"
"We were just checking to see if this is your primary residence?"
"I've got no comments on where I stay."
"No comments on where you stay?"
"No comments at all."
"Do you own this property?
Records from the Hattiesburg Water Department indicate while the monthly bill has been paid, there has been no consumption of water since December 2012 at the Windsor Drive address.
To further complicate matters for the Andersons, the couple is listed as having homestead exemption in two places in 2012- the city of Hattiesburg and Jones County.
Anderson's request for homestead exemption in Hattiesburg for 2013 was denied by the tax assessor's office because he had already applied for homestead exemption in Jones County for 2013. Documents show where Joseph Anderson stated his Jones County address was his principal residence and he did not claim homestead exemption in any other county or state. Now because of his dual homestead exemption in 2012, the Jones County Tax Assessor's Office says that Anderson and his wife owe an additional $1663.82 in taxes.
This coming Monday, Jones County supervisors will be presented with this affidavit for collection from the tax assessor's office, which states that Joseph and Carmon Anderson claimed homestead exemption in Forrest County in 2012 and filed fraudulent class 1 affidavit in Jones County for 2012.
Another visit was made to South Forrest County to check on Gregory Hinton's property on South Lake Road. Hinton has claimed homestead exemption at this address since 2006, but when he did not answer the door, we traveled to the address where he is registered to vote on Tuscan Avenue in Hattiesburg. Hinton's daughter came while we were there and told us her father does not live at the Tuscan Avenue address, which has been her home since she bought it from her parents in 2009.
