2 TPD officers under investigation for weekend incident resign, 1 relieved of duty

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Two Toledo Police officers who had been under investigation because of a weekend incident involving a gun have resigned.

Toledo Police Lt. Mark King says Officer Jada Smith resigned Wednesday night and Officer Scott Macinnis resigned Thursday afternoon.  Both were under investigation for a shooting incident early Saturday morning at the Standart Lofts on Erie Street.

Lt. King says Jada Smith admitted to firing her weapon but police don't know the reason.

King says a third officer, Carlyle Gaffeney, was also under investigation in the incident and has been relieved of duty with full pay. King says he has no knowledge of a resignation by Gaffeney.

Police say officers Smith and Micginnis were dating, and got into some sort of disagreement around 1:30 Saturday morning. Dispatch logs show that Macinnis called police saying that Smith fired off a shot trying to kill herself, and that he wrestled the weapon away from her and needed help.

Police at the scene say a shot was fired into the floor.  Police also collected evidence at the scene, including a 40 caliber hand gun and ammunition.

According to King, police have closed the internal investigation into former officers Smith and Macinnis.  Both could still face criminal charges for discharging a weapon in public.
