LAMAR COUNTY, MS (WDAM) -

Lamar County officials and the State Department of Environmental Quality are investigating a leak under the spillway of the North Lake Serene dam that officials have said is 'worthy of concern.'

It was discovered Wednesday afternoon during a routine inspection by the homeowner's association.

Crews were on the scene Wednesday night placing sandbags around what emergency management officials call a 'boil' coming out from under the spillway.  They say no homes are threatened and that the only potential concern is traffic on Highway 98, which runs parallel to the lake.

"We're calling it a concern at this point, just like we always do," said James Smith, executive director of Lamar County Emergency Management. "We're being proactive in making sure that we take care of all the safety measures. Highway 98 is really the only thing (that could be) impacted. We have a lot of traffic on 98, so we're definitely watching the situation closely and we'll keep monitoring it until we've got it under control," he said.

Officials said they will remain on the scene overnight and may lower the level of the lake in the coming days to see if any repairs need to be made.

The dam on the 92-acre lake was built in 1969.
