Monken not making excuses about turnovers

The 2013 Southern Miss Football season can be summed up in one word: turnovers.

In fact, the Golden Eagles have coughed up the ball in 33 straight games dating back to 2010, in a 56-50 loss to Tulsa during the Larry Fedora Era.

The team has turned the ball over 19 times through five games, including four in their loss to Florida International.

Ball security is a major concern for Southern Miss coaches and fixing it is something at the top of their agenda.

However, Head Coach Monken said that bad luck was not a factor in their misfortunes, and he wasn't making any excuses.

"I'd hate to put it to bad luck, I think that's a cop out," said Monken. "You look last week I think there's reasons for everything and it's a borderline between are there reason or are you just making excuses."

Monken said that ultimately the team had to stop turning over the ball.

"I don't truly believe in how much luck there is. I don't know if it's bad luck," said Marcus Arroyo, Southern Miss Offensive Coordinator. "Does it suck? Yeah, it sucks. Is it a number of things? Yeah we all see that. If we don't see that, then we're all just starting at Black and White numbers."

Southern Miss is tied for 3rd in the most turnovers in the FBS this season.
