HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Hattiesburg-area veterans gathered Sunday morning in the Hub City to show solidarity with other vets who are in Washington, D.C. this weekend to protest the closing of the National World War Two Memorial and other national monuments because of the government shutdown.

The veterans met at Hattiesburg Veterans Park for a brief ceremony in support of what's being called the Million Vet March on the Memorials Sunday.

The informal gathering will include a prayer.

Organizers say they'll emphasize two main points.

"One...don't use the veterans memorials as a pawn in any political activity or agenda...two, is get the job done. Our nation depends on the leadership to do their jobs, and we want them to do their jobs, whatever it takes," said George Herrington, a veteran and organizer of the event.

It begins at 9 a.m.
