In wake of Hattiesburg election Secretary of State wants changes

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Secretary of State Delbert Hoseman says he was disappointed in what transpired during the September, 24 special election for mayor in Hattiesburg.

He says his office spent hundreds of hours to try to ensure the process was handled correctly. Hoseman says they are frustrated by the things that happened, particularly after the polls closed.

He said although his office is not the voting police, there are things he would like the legislature to do to improve the process.

"We're introducing for the third time legislation that will only allow you to sign for ten individuals that are voting by affidavit," said Hoseman. "In addition to that you'll see us discuss assistance voting. You have a lot of people claiming to be out of the county on election day. I think that is something the legislature should address."

Hoseman says he would also like the legislature to set minimum standards for poll workers.
