LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - Gov. Phil Bryant, Laurel city officials and economic developers gathered Friday morning to announce that Wayne Farms is expanding its operations in Laurel.

The company is adding a new processing line and renovating the existing facility.

It's a $3 million investment which will create 150 new jobs.

Wayne Farms produces fresh and processed poultry and has been in Laurel since 1957.

The Mississippi Development Authority provided assistance to the project through the Community Development Block Grant program.

"We put about $800,000 of CDBG money into it, for economic development purposes, creating another 150 jobs, which will put them over 900 jobs here at Wayne Farms in Jones County," said Gov. Bryant. "Now, that's a great day for economic development," he said.

In Laurel, Mississippi, 150 jobs is very, very significant," said Johnny Magee, mayor of Laurel. "That means there are 150 people today who are not working that have a possibility of having a job as soon as this expansion is completed," Magee said.

"The expansion is slated for the week of Thanksgiving," said Clint Rivers, vice-president and general manager of the Fresh Business Unit of Wayne Farms. "The plant is going to be down for several days to allow the project work to be completed. So, when we come back from the Thanksgiving holiday, is when we'll be starting up with the new processes," Rivers said.

Wayne Farms owns and operates eleven facilities in the Southeast and has annual sales of nearly $2 billion.
