KNOXVILLE, TN - In their third SEC matchup of the season, the sixth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs won a 34-31 nail-biter Saturday over the Tennessee Volunteers.
Georgia improves to 4-1 on the year, including a 3-0 mark in the SEC. The Vols fall to 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the SEC.
In overtime, Tennessee quickly drove down to the Georgia three-yard line. The Vols handed a snap to Pig Howard, but he fumbled on the goal line, resulting in a touchback.
Georgia regained possession of the ball on the Tennessee 25-yard line. With the Bulldogs unable to convert a first down, Morgan lined up for a field goal and hit a 42-yarder straight through the uprights, sealing the Georgia win.
Quarterback Aaron Murray led the Bulldogs through the air completing 19 of 35 passes for 196 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also notched 53 yards on the ground. Murray surpassed former Georgia quarterback David Green to become the all-time leader in yards passing in SEC history.
On its opening drive, Georgia took an early 3-0 lead with a 56-yard field goal by Marshall Morgan. The kick was a career long for Morgan and the longest field goal successfully kicked against the Vols in Tennessee history.
The Bulldogs extended the lead on their next drive, going 80 yards in 12 plays, when Murray connected with Conley in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown. After Morgan's kick, Georgia took a 10-0 lead over the Vols.
Tennessee put together an 11-play drive down to the Georgia three-yard line. The Bulldogs held the Vols to three points as Michael Palardy kicked a 26-yarder through the uprights.
Georgia responded on its next drive on a fourth-and-four situation. Georgia went for it, and Murray hit Conley across the middle for a big first down. The drive ended with a scoring pass to Wooten, and Georgia headed into the locker room with a 17-3 lead.
Tennessee took advantage of a Morgan field goal miss after halftime and cut the Georgia lead to seven with a touchdown pass from Justin Worley to Marquez North.
Tennessee's defense then took a stand, forcing Georgia to punt from deep in its own territory. Collin Barber's punt was blocked by Tennessee and recovered by Devaun Swafford for a Vols touchdown. After Palardy's kick, the score was tied 17-17.
Georgia quickly bounced back to a 24-17 lead with a 3-yard touchdown run by Brendan Douglas. The drive was highlighted by a 57-yard run by Murray that set up the scoring play from the three-yard line.
But Tennessee responded on its next drive, converting a fourth-and-one with a 43-yard gain by Rajion Neal. He capped off the drive for the Vols with a touchdown, once again tying the score at 24.
The Vols took 6:42 off the clock in the fourth quarter on a 13-play, 80-yard drive resulting in a 7-yard touchdown run by Neal.
Down 31-24, Murray hit Wooten in the back of the end zone for a two-yard touchdown pass with five seconds left on the clock and tied the score at 31.
