(RNN) - Americans felt the ripple effects of the government shutdown for most of the week.

Congressional leaders failed to reach a budget deal by Oct. 1. Because of the shutdown, the Smithsonian museums closed, national parks closed and many government workers were furloughed.

Gunshots rang out near the U.S. Capitol after police fired on a fleeing vehicle Thursday. Authorities say the driver hit a temporary barricade and would not cooperate with police before driving off. Two officers were injured in the incident, and the suspect was pronounced dead. The investigation is ongoing.

Tom Clancy, the author known for suspenseful military novels, has died. He was 66 years old. Clancy's books include: The Hunt for Red October, The Sum of All Fears, Rainbow Six, Cardinal of the Kremlin, Debt of Honor, Red Storm Rising, Without Remorse, Clear and Present Danger, Executive Orders and Patriot Games.
