FORREST COUNTY, MS (WDAM) - Members of a Forrest County church which was founded just after Mississippi became a state will be celebrating that church's 195th birthday this weekend. The congregation of Providence Baptist Church in Eatonville will hold their homecoming celebration on Sunday, Oct. 6.
The church was organized on Oct. 3, 1818. The first pastor was a veteran of the Revolutionary War.
Mississippi had just become the nation's 20th state 10 months earlier.
"There are some families represented here...2nd, 3rd, 4th generations are represented here," said David Williamson, pastor of Providence Baptist Church. "They enjoy the church and they continue to come back because there's a sense of family to them and it continues to build up their faith," he said.
Activities will include a celebratory service beginning at 10:30 a.m., followed by a lunch served in the church's fellowship hall.
