The Lamar County Sheriff's department said a man was assaulted in the Bellevue Baptist Church parking lot at the intersection of Hwy 589 and Hwy 98 around midnight Saturday.
According to Lamar County Sheriff Danny Rigel, the victim, plus one individual, were about to get into their vehicle, which was in the church parking lot, when they were approached by a black car. The sheriff said the car was carrying three males and two females. One male in the black car allegedly assaulted the victim.
The friend of the alleged victim fired two rounds at the suspect's black car as the suspect drove away. Sheriff Danny Rigel said that no one was struck by gunfire.
Rigel said the suspect more than likely made the attack due to mistaken identity.
The sheriff's department is waiting on the victim to sign an affidavit so that the suspect can be tracked down.
Officials have not released any names of the people involved.
