Author Tom Clancy dead at 66

(RNN) - Clear and Present Danger and Against all Enemies author Tom Clancy died Tuesday Oct. 1. He was 66.

The best-selling author was best known for his for techno thrillers and espionage.

In 1984, he wrote his first novel The Hunt for Red October, since then over 50 million copies of his books have been printed, 10 books have been No. 1 on the New York Times best-seller list and three books have become movies.

The Hunt for Red October was the first novel of Clancy's Hollywood made into a movie. Released in 1990, the film boasted A-list stars like Sean Connery and Alec Baldwin.

According to the Associated Press, President Ronald Reagan got The Hunt for Red October as a Christmas gift and he lost sleep because he couldn't put the book down. Clancy later said that helped put him on the New York Times best-seller list.

Clancy's books include: The Hunt for Red October, The Sum of All Fears, Rainbow Six, Cardinal of the Kremlin, Debt of Honor, Red Storm Rising, Without Remorse, Clear and Present Danger, Executive Orders and Patriot Games.

Some books written by Clancy are required readings at some U.S. military schools.

According to the Associated Press, Clancy graduated from Loyola College in Baltimore in 1969 and married his wife Wanda. He joined her family's insurance business, all the while scribbling down ideas for a novel.

After the Sept. 11 attacks, Clancy said on Fox News that liberal politicians were partly responsible because of the cuts made to the CIA.

Clancy never served in the armed forces, but has had an interest in naval history since he was child.

The cause of death wasn't immediately known, but The New York Times reports that he died in Baltimore, his hometown.

According to CNN, his new novel Command Authority is scheduled for publication in December.

Ivan Held, President and Publisher of G.P. Putnam's Sons said in  a statement:

"It was an honor to know Tom Clancy and to work on his fantastic books.  He was ahead of the news curve and sometimes frighteningly prescient.  To publish a Tom Clancy book was a thrill every time. He will be missed by everyone at Putnam and Berkley, and by his fans all over the world."
